Join the Ubudian Yogis

Ubud has become somewhat of a priority destination for yoga and meditation over the last decade. Enterprising foreign yogis found the perfect place for their shalas in Bali's spiritual heart, and an increasingly affluent tourist clientele looking for wellness options.

Now you are spoiled for choice both for different styles and places. Many hotels will have in-house yoga shalas and classes, and you can even get teachers to come to your villa for private classes. But here is a selection of Ubud's Yoga places for a large range of options. Be warned, yoga is not super cheap in Ubud. A standard class is pretty much what I usually pay in Sydney, but this is an activity that is generally done by bulés (foreigners) - although there is a growing number of domestic (mostly Javanese) tourists who are joining. All of the listed places offer discounts for packs of classes.

Yoga Barn

Yoga Ubud

In central Ubud is a surprisingly large and peaceful centre with seven yoga studios and many yoga, meditation and dance classes each week, along with various healing treatments. They offer almost all the major styles and also have a fun cafe (with raw, vegan and Ayurvedic food), ecstatic dance classes (remind me to tell you of my hilarious experience), concerts, movies and more. The Yoga Barn also offers (quite pricey) accomodation, teacher training and has a spa. A standard class (which, be warned, can be quite large) is R140k (~US$9) Website.

Ubud Yoga Centre

Yoga Ubud

This is a stunning building on the cliff edge in south Ubud offering a range of yoga, dance and pilates. You can find hot yoga and barre here as well as aerial yoga for the more advanced practitioner, along with standard vinyasa, hatha, ashtanga, yin and breathwork. There is also a pleasant cafe, a kids centre (with kids yoga) along with workshops, retreats and events. My gripe with this one is the poor bathroom and changing facilities for women. A single class is R130k. Website.

Best Yoga Ubud

Another oasis in the heart of Ubud, Taksu is a very appealing larger centre with a restaurant, cafe, spa, and wellness centre along with classes in Hatha, Vinyasa, Restorative and slow, basic and gentle yoga for the less flexible. They offer teacher training and private lessons, and drop-in classes are R120k (US$8). Note that the classes are often nice and small but they can be hot in the middle of the day. Website.

Intuitive Flow

Yoga Ubud

This spot overlooks the Campuhan Ridge Walk in Penestanen - a predominantly expat suburb in west Ubud. They offer the standard classes and a few unusual styles including Himalayan Kriya. There is also yoga teacher training and something called Vedic counselling in French and English. This one is slightly cheaper than the bigger studios noted above with a drop-in price of R110k. Website.

Ubud Yoga House

Yoga Ubud

A gorgeous place in the ricefields within walking distance to Ubud centre, Ubud Yoga House is a smaller, boutique shala offering hatha, vinyasa flow and sunrise and sunset yoga. They have small classes in their open air studio, and also offer teacher training, online yoga and events. Classes are R130k. Website

Radiantly Alive

Yoga Ubud

Offering the standard Yin, Kundalini and Hatha, Radiantly Alive also has a large number of more unusual offerings such as Sky Yoga, restorative ball therapy, feminine flow, Qigong and something called Biodynamic Breath Trauma Release. Their rates are R130k for a class, and they have (quite pricey) private classes, teacher training, and various healings including a 'Balinese healing package' which consists of

nothing more exotic than acupuncture and massage. Radiantly Alive is in very central and convenient spot. Website

Usada Bali

Moksa Dojo
